| What is an Encepalocele? |

In laymen's terms an encephalocele is an opening in the bone of the skull. All
infants have a fontanelle (soft spot) at birth. Imagine a larger soft spot that can
occur anywhere in the skull. In Dana's case the opening was at the base of her skull.
This bony defect can produce a cyst which may contain cerebral fluid and/or brain
tissue.
According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc.,
Encephaloceles are "a rare disorder in which an infant is born with a gap in the skull;
that is, a part of one or more of the plates that form the skull does not seal. The
membranes that cover the brain (meninges), and brain tissue, protrude through this.
